What is the difference between Taekwondo and Karate?

When people consider beginning training in some form of martial arts, they will often ask "what is the difference between karate and taekwondo?" Both forms of martial arts are excellent, offering many benefits to the student. Benefits like self-discipline, focus, respect, and a high code of conduct.

How do they differ?

Taekwondo brings more emphasis on kicking style and the use of hands as its backup. While Karate focuses more on hand techniques and the use of legs as a backup.

Karate Versus Taekwondo

Taekwondo is Korean based.

Karate is Japanese based.

Taekwondo is an Olympic sport.

Taekwondo tends to favor fast kicking, and the training is well-rounded involving blocks, punches, open-handed strikes, take-downs, throws, and joint locks.

Karate is known for hand techniques and includes knee and elbow strikes, with a certain amount of kicking techniques.
